Cllr Cooper, aged 50, said: "I was born and raised in this constituency and it would be an honour to represent Halesowen and Rowley Regis in Westminster.

"I have loved my role as councillor for Belle Vale and as cabinet member for children's services at Dudley Council and believe I have what it takes to be an MP." He added: "Running children's services at Dudley Council means I see every day the consequences of the constant cuts from Westminster are doing to this generation of children. If I am successful in my application to become Labour's candidate for Halesowen and Rowley Regis I will give everything to ensure she gets the message loud and clear that people in this part of the world want an end to her party's assault on schools, the NHS and so many other things that people hold dear."
