- Statement to voters
I have worked for the last fifteen years in young person and family services; currently am a senior manager working with young carers. I have witnessed the destruction of voluntary and statutory sector services over the last 10 years; beginning under the Conservative and Lib Dem Coalition, we are no longer able to provide early intervention, only crisis response services. The result of brutal austerity is a crisis in mental health, social care and SEND services.
Housing is in short supply and inaccessible, increasing homelessness. Our schools are desperately trying to provide support to families, filling gaps in service provision. They too are struggling with reducing budgets, making difficult decisions every day, putting pressure on staff. Enough is enough, I cannot watch everything falling apart around me any longer. Families feeling ashamed to go to a food bank through no fault of their own, getting into debt to make ends meet. On waiting lists for healthcare, disabled people suffering and losing their independence. I want to challenge the career politicians who are so disconnected from reality, they don’t feel the impact. I have been their myself fighting for support for my own son who has SEND, I’ve faced many of the difficulties other families have in my own life and want to advocate for them.
As an MP I will work for my constituents, all of them. I will work to introduce policies that will allow people to transform their lives, providing personal care, free of charge, to all over 65’s in need as is already the case in Scotland, investing in the health service, in green energy, in our infrastructure, in our homes, creating local, well paid, skilled jobs and making education a right, not an expensive privilege. For this, and so much more, I urge you to vote Labour.
