- Statement to voters
As a Green Councillor I pledge to work on a local level for you to preserve our environment and living conditions and always to face up the global challenges of the climate emergency as I do so.
I am was formerly a TV director and am now a local English teacher who has lived and worked in Wandsworth for over 20 years. I am deeply attached to this beautiful part of London. I am standing for Council as a Green Party member because I want to represent Green ideas on the Council and council has no Green representatives on it at present. We want to change that, and have voices on the council to speak up on many local issues which at the moment are disregarded. For instance, we want more regulation of the housing developments which are rampant. We care about the preservation of our trees and green spaces and in fact want more of them. We know local traffic is a worry for residents so we want more cycle lanes and public transport that will free up our roads for essential vehicles. We want a real living wage so important jobs like social care are paid fairly. We want to encourage local shops and businesses to thrive. We want to re-instate some of the council's massive cuts to youth clubs for our young people. We want a food composting collection in line with most other boroughs instead of expensive and climate-destroying incineration.
With Green voices on the council, the emergency in our climate and our disregard for the natural world will always be considered as part of the picture. Despite declaring a Climate Emergency in 2019 (thanks to a massive petition organised by Glyn Goodwin who is another Green candidate in this ward) and designing a wordy Environmental and Sustainability Strategy, the council favours fancy words over acts, and is not making changes fast enough or widely enough to save us.
Air pollution is choking us, temperatures in Wandsworth are on track for 43°C in the next 30 years and flooding is going to affect more and more residents - yet no one in power is currently taking action for the mitigation or limitation of this. We are all neighbours and we are all together on this. More Green voices on the local council are essential if we are to protect ourselves and our lives.
